An Image of Justice: 1st edition: Genocide, Truth & Reconcilaion

The 1st edition of An Image of Justice, a global political cartoon exhibit, featuring world-renowned cartoonists, under the theme of ‘Genocide, Truth, and Reconciliation’, brings images from the vast inscape of political cartoonists to the sight of its audience. The 29 exhibited cartoons were selected from more than 500 submissions from 37 countries. An Image of Justice, through the universal language of the Image and inspired by the Calls to Action of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, contributes to an open dialogical discourse for imagining truth and reconciliation.

1st Edition’s International Panel of Jurors

Mariana Rosa is an independent journalist based in Belo Horizonte. She is an experienced editor with diverse areas of interest, who writes and tells stories not only about daily routines and business but also on social inclusion and diversity in various Brazilian and international communities.

Ramon is a Ph.D. Candidate and Professor in Training at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Seville, Spain. He is a visual artist, known under the pseudonym of ‘233’. Ramon sends social and political messages in order to make people reflect on their communities, both local and universal, constantly raising human rights issues. The number ‘233’ referes to the ‘identity game’ of our “overpopulated world system”. His artworks have been exhibited around the world, featuring his last project ‘The Universal Game. One flag to Connect Us All’, an outreach art project sponsored by the HRREC at the University of Ottawa, Canada, to mark the International Human Rights Day (December 10) through a message of solidarity, diversity and further development of global exchange and inclusion. Ramon’s other projects include ‘Integração’ in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil, 2014) and ‘Is this dangerous? The carry on version’ in Seville (Spain, 2015). Ramon has also been awarded several grants, scholarships and artist residencies, bringing his art to the UK, Argentina, Western Sahara, Palestine, Brazil, Canada and the USA among others. He is the Winner of the Second Prize in the Crossing Borders International Competition by Emergent Art Space in San Francisco (the US) in 2012. Ramon is one of the founders and cultural managers of ‘MAGENTA BICYCLE’, a sustainable art and education project based in Cañada Rosal (Spain) contributing as the production and artist assistant for the Slovenian Pavilion at the 55th International Art Exhibition: La Biennale di Venezia (Italy) in 2013. In 2012, Ramon was a faculty member at the Winchester School of Art of the University of Southampton (UK). Nowadays he teaches Digital Image and Engraving at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Seville (Spain).

Alexia Bystrzycki is a federal prosecutor in Toronto with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. In her free time, she’s rediscovering her love for painting and drawing as a means of storytelling and exploring contemporary social issues.
